Coping Strategies in Emerging Mental Health Disorders
Abstract

This study examined trending mental health issues and various positive and negative strategies of coping by the people. While positive coping strategies were adopted by some individuals, others adopted negative ways of coping strategies include, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and lack of adequate sleeping, lack of exercise, poor eating habit, to mention but few. Treatment patterns were also provided which involves, psychotherapy, medication, case management, hospitalisation, support group, and, complementary and alternative medicine. Recommendations were made that, people should restrict anything that will put their mental health in a state of jeopardy and adopt appropriate coping mechanism. Clinical Counseling Psychologist should create sufficient awareness on emerging mental health issues to reduce its trend and menace. Non-Governmental Organizations should step up their mental health awareness programmes and, government should come up with policy that will mandate social medial to devote time to mental health awareness, incorporate mental health teaching in schools’ curriculum, and make mental health services readily available, accessible, and avoidable to the people in our health facilities in order to reduce the mental health problems in our societies.
