This paper mapped the strategic action framework that Nigeria needs to adopt in achieving the sustainable development goal 5 which emphasises gender equality and empowerment of women and girls in all countries. The cardinal issues discussed in the paper included background knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the 2030 Agenda, the conceptual clarifications of gender, gender equality, forms of gender inequality, benefits of achieving gender
equality and empowerment of women and girls, and the efforts in achieving gender equality and empowerment of women and girls in Nigeria. The paper suggested recommendations that Nigeria can adopt in achieving SDG 5 in the country and concluded that an intersectional governance approach, implementing gender equality in the public sector and legislation, and supporting whole-of-society efforts to support girls’ and women’s empowerment and address
discrimination in social norms and unconscious biases critical for implementing gender equality in Nigeria.
